LIVINGSTONE
Named after the famous Victorian missionary explorer, Dr. David Livingstone, the town was established in 1905. As a major European settlement, the town was made the capital of Northern Rhodesia in 1911. As the capital, it enjoyed excellent facilities far superior to anything in the country, as can be seen from the surviving Edwardian colonial buildings that line the city's main road, and even had the distinction of having the country's first newspaper.
The capital was moved to Lusaka in 1935 and the bustling city has become a quiet town, a little neglected but still retaining a special charm. The town of Livingstone lies a few kilometres upstream of the might Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. It is a destination that everyone who visits southern Africa must visit. The Falls never fail to blow you away – they are simply spectacular. There is the full range of accommodation and a million activities to choose from. Sip champagne on the edge of the Falls, canoe through the palm tree studded islands, jump from the bridge attached by a piece of elastic(!), ride elephants through the National Park, and much more. It can be tranquil, or you can go for a wild time. But whatever you dream of, Livingstone will provide it. Zambian Airways flies daily to Livingstone.

LUSAKA

The city lies at the junction of the main highways to the north, east, south and west at an altitude of 1,300m above sea level. There are air links to most of the major tourist destinations in Zambia from Lusaka International Airport. Zambian Airways hub is Lusaka. The Luangwa River is one of the last uninterrupted major rivers in the world. The variety of the habitats from ebony groves to open grass areas to the water filled lagoons that run along the Luangwa River give you the backdrop for some of the best gameviewing in Africa. It can be quite breathtaking!
The Luangwa is the home of "walking safaris" and there are excellent lodges, camps and bushcamps from where you can experience both walking and drives in the bush. NDOLA
An important commercial centre in Zambia, Ndola lies 320 kilometres north of Lusaka. It is the gateway to the mineral producing region of the country, the Copperbelt province, with the major towns being Ndola, Kitwe, Chingola and Luanshya. Like Lusaka, the development of Ndola has been rapid and extensive.
There are many manufacturing industries here, including a major copper refinery. Although copper is still Zambia's largest foreign exchange earner and the mainstay of the national economy, the city of Ndola has established itself as a commercial and light industrial centre of considerable importance; as well as being the junction and distribution centre for the Copperbelt complex. The oil pipeline from Dar-Es-Salaam ends itÂ’s 1,700 km journey at the Ndola refinery. Zambian Airways flies to Ndola three times daily during the week and also offers three weekend flights. |
